A CONVERSATION ON WOMEN, DIPLOMACY AND THE POWER OF COLLABORATION IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
In the evolving landscape of global diplomacy, women leaders continue to play a significant role in shaping international dialogue and cooperation. As Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to Singapore, Her Excellency Ambassador Mrs. Jessica Maria López represents her country’s diplomatic mission with a commitment to dialogue, cultural exchange, and international collaboration. With a career rooted in diplomacy and public service, she embodies a vision of engagement that emphasises solidarity among nations and the strengthening of global partnerships.
In a thoughtful conversation with IN Diplomacy, Her Excellency Ambassador reflected on the theme of International Women’s Day 2026, “Give to Gain.” The discussion explored broader themes of diplomacy, gender equality, and multilateral cooperation. From the importance of women’s leadership in international affairs to the evolving relationship between Venezuela and Singapore, the exchange offered insights into how diplomacy continues to adapt in a complex geopolitical environment.
Reflecting on her background, Her Excellency Ambassador Mrs. Jessica Maria López noted that the values of solidarity, community and service have long shaped her approach to international engagement. Growing up in Venezuela, she witnessed the central role women play in strengthening families, communities, and institutions. These early influences fostered her belief that diplomacy should not only represent national interests but also serve as a bridge for mutual understanding between cultures.

Her Excellency Ambassador professional journey in diplomacy reflects this perspective. Over the years, she has participated in initiatives aimed at strengthening international dialogue and fostering cooperation among nations. Through her diplomatic work, she has sought to balance policy engagement with cultural diplomacy, emphasising the importance of communication and shared values in international relations.
Discussing the theme of “Give to Gain,” the Ambassador described it as a powerful reflection of collective responsibility. For her, the concept resonates strongly with the principles of the Bolivarian Diplomacy of Peace, which prioritises dialogue, solidarity, and cooperation.
“As a Venezuelan diplomat, ‘Give to Gain’ means building bridges between cultures and promoting mutual understanding,” she explained. “Every space for dialogue and every joint initiative represents an opportunity to strengthen friendship among nations and advance equal opportunities for all.”
Her Excellency Ambassador also highlighted the enduring strength of Venezuelan women, noting that they have historically played a central role in the country’s social and political life. Their resilience, she said, is reflected in their commitment to community development, education, entrepreneurship, and public service.
“Venezuelan women have transformed challenges into opportunities,” she remarked. “Their spirit of solidarity and creativity continues to guide the path toward a more inclusive society.”
During her diplomatic mission in Singapore, she has also observed the increasing recognition of women’s leadership across different societies. The experience, she said, has reaffirmed the importance of diversity in decision-making spaces.
“Women’s participation in international affairs should not be viewed as an exception,” she noted. “It is a natural expression of more inclusive societies where diverse perspectives strengthen dialogue and contribute to peaceful solutions.”
The conversation also turned to the role of mentorship in diplomacy. According to the Ambassador, one of the most valuable contributions women diplomats can offer the next generation is guidance and encouragement.
“A woman in diplomacy can give future leaders the example of perseverance and commitment to public service,” she said. “When women share their experiences and support each other through mentorship and professional networks, young professionals gain the confidence to pursue leadership roles.”
Bilateral relations between Venezuela and Singapore also formed part of the discussion. Despite the geographical distance between the two countries, the Ambassador described the relationship as an example of constructive engagement based on mutual respect and shared interests.

“The principle of ‘Give to Gain’ reflects the spirit of cooperation between our nations,” she explained. “Through dialogue and collaboration, countries can exchange knowledge and experiences that benefit both societies.”
Looking ahead, the Ambassador expressed optimism about the future of gender equality in diplomacy. She believes the next decade will see continued progress toward greater representation of women in leadership positions within foreign services and international institutions.
“Gender equality in diplomacy is not only about representation,” she said. “It is essential for building a more effective and inclusive international system.”
As the conversation concluded, the Ambassador reflected on diplomacy’s enduring purpose in an increasingly interconnected world. In her view, dialogue, collaboration, and respect for diversity remain the cornerstones of international engagement.
“Diplomacy ultimately serves the well-being of peoples,” she observed. “When nations work together with openness and mutual respect, we move closer to building a more balanced and cooperative international community.”
Through her work and vision, the Ambassador continues to exemplify how diplomacy, grounded in dialogue and solidarity, can contribute to addressing global challenges while fostering a more inclusive international order.
