The Indian Ocean Region remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors, linking the economies of Africa, the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia. Recognising its importance, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, introduced the SAGAR vision—Security and Growth for All in the Region—in 2015 to promote cooperative maritime security and inclusive development.

Building on this vision, the Indian Navy launched the IOS SAGAR initiative in 2025 as a practical platform for multinational maritime cooperation. The programme brings together naval personnel from partner countries for joint training, operational deployment and professional exchanges aimed at strengthening maritime security across the region.

For the 2026 mission, 38 naval personnel from 16 partner countries—including Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and South Africa—underwent training at Indian naval institutions in Kochi. The training covered seamanship, navigation, maritime safety, search and rescue operations, as well as advanced procedures such as Visit, Board, Search and Seizure operations.

The deployment is centred on the Indian naval vessel INS Sunayna, which serves as a platform for joint exercises and maritime patrols. During the current mission, the ship has conducted port calls in Malé, Phuket and Jakarta before arriving in Singapore.

Beyond operational training, IOS SAGAR also promotes naval diplomacy through professional exchanges and cultural engagement among participating navies. The initiative reflects India’s commitment to strengthening maritime partnerships and fostering a stable, cooperative security architecture in the Indian Ocean Region.
