Infocomm Media Development Authority consults tech firms on voluntary AI product labelling to disclose capabilities and limitations like food packaging.
Singapore is actively consulting technology companies on introducing “nutrition labels” for artificial intelligence products, according to a parliamentary response from the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) on 5 May 2026. The ministry and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) are exploring a voluntary framework for AI‑enabled application providers to disclose key information about each product’s capabilities and limitations in a clear, accessible format.
The disclosure came in a written parliamentary answer. The initiative builds on broader government efforts to strengthen digital trust and online safety in Singapore’s technology ecosystem.
According to MDDI, the ministry is currently in consultation with relevant service providers to determine how information from AI nutrition labels can help shape user behaviour. The provision of information will complement existing baseline safety measures, such as age‑assurance requirements for app stores that took effect from 1 April 2026. Digital Development and Information Minister Josephine Teo later explained that the labels would indicate the “right ways” and “not‑so‑correct ways” of using AI, similar to food or medicine labels. Minister Teo added that Singapore may begin with a voluntary AI transparency framework, then assess its effectiveness before deciding on mandatory next steps. The IMDA has positioned this initiative as part of Singapore’s broader AI governance strategy, which includes testing frameworks like AI Verify and sectoral guidelines for responsible AI deployment.
Ongoing government consultations and the potential introduction of AI nutrition labels mark a significant step toward a more transparent and trusted artificial intelligence ecosystem in Singapore. As the country continues developing testing frameworks and accreditation mechanisms, it aims to balance innovation with responsible deployment, ensuring consumers and businesses can make informed choices about the AI products they use.
