Step into a world of Moorish architecture, intricate mosaics and Moroccan craftsmanship at the Moroccan Pavilion Putrajaya. Set within the Putrajaya Botanical Garden, this striking landmark celebrates the cultural and diplomatic ties between Malaysia and Morocco.
A remarkable showcase of Moroccan architecture in Malaysia, the Moroccan Pavilion Putrajaya, also known as Astaka Morocco, offers visitors a glimpse into the country’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.
Surrounded by landscaped gardens and a scenic lake, the pavilion was built to symbolise the strong diplomatic relationship between Malaysia and Morocco. Covering approximately 18,000 square feet, the magnificent complex took two years to complete, with materials imported from Morocco and skilled Moroccan artisans brought in to preserve its authenticity.
The pavilion beautifully combines traditional Moroccan architecture with Islamic artistic influences. Inspired by Morocco’s historic imperial cities, its interiors feature colourful mosaics, intricate geometric patterns, Arabic calligraphy and elegant arabesque designs. Almost every surface is decorated with detailed craftsmanship, creating an immersive experience for visitors.
The pavilion comprises four galleries, each inspired by Morocco’s historic cities and featuring its own distinctive character. No two rooms are alike, with each space showcasing different patterns, designs and architectural details. Cedarwood, traditionally used for doors, wall panelling and selected furnishings, adds another layer of Moroccan character to the interiors.
Outside, pools and fountains decorated with colourful geometric tiles lead towards the pavilion’s grand entrance arches. Together with the gardens surrounding it, these features create a tranquil setting that contrasts beautifully with the intricate richness of the architecture.
Beyond its visual appeal, the Moroccan Pavilion offers an opportunity to experience Moroccan culture without leaving Malaysia. Visitors can explore the galleries and inner courtyards for a modest entrance fee, making it an accessible cultural attraction for architecture enthusiasts, travellers and families.
How to Get There
The Moroccan Pavilion is located within the Putrajaya Botanical Garden. From Kuala Lumpur, visitors travelling by public transport can take the KLIA Transit train from KL Sentral to Putrajaya Sentral, followed by a taxi or Nadi Putra bus towards the Botanical Garden.
