Indonesia to expand skilled employment opportunities and protection for migrant workers abroad.
Indonesia’s Deputy Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI), Ms Christina Aryani, met Indonesia’s Ambassador to Singapore, H.E. Hotmangaradja Pandjaitan, and officials of the Embassy of Indonesia in Singapore on Tuesday, 15 September 2026. The meeting discussed the conditions of Indonesian migrant workers in Singapore, skilled employment opportunities and protection for workers facing legal or other problems in the country of placement.
During the meeting, Ms Christina Aryani requested the Embassy’s support in identifying and exploring potential skilled employment opportunities in Singapore. She said information on labour demand was important so Indonesia could prepare workers’ competencies domestically before the placement process.
“We hope the Ambassador and the Embassy of Indonesia in Singapore can continue to explore skilled employment opportunities in Singapore. Information on labour needs is important to us so that we can prepare the competencies first in Indonesia before the placement process,” Ms Christina Aryani said.
Ms Christina Aryani said the approach was aligned with the demand-driven concept under President Prabowo Subianto’s SMK Go Global programme, which seeks to prepare human resources according to labour market needs. The programme is intended to align training with the requirements of destination countries and businesses.
Ms Christina Aryani also expressed appreciation for the Embassy’s services for Indonesian migrant workers, including assistance in handling various cases and placement documents. She specifically requested the Embassy to provide assistance and monitor the legal process involving Indonesian migrant worker Ms Maria Ingrid Seran.
“We hope the Embassy will continue to be present in providing assistance to migrant workers facing legal issues. Protection must be carried out comprehensively, including ensuring that they have access to the assistance and legal processes they require,” Ms Christina Aryani said.
To improve coordination and handling in the field, Ms Christina Aryani said the Ministry of P2MI would, for the first time, place a technical employment officer at the Embassy of Indonesia in Singapore. She said the officer was expected to work closely with Embassy officials to support services and protection for Indonesian migrant workers in Singapore.
“We ask for the support of the Ambassador and all Embassy officials so that our technical employment officer can work well with the team. We hope this presence will further strengthen services and protection for Indonesian migrant workers in Singapore,” Ms Christina Aryani said.
