Meeting highlighted honorary consuls’ contributions to consular assistance, business connections and Singapore’s international relations
Singapore hosted its Honorary Consuls General Meeting (HCGM) lunch to recognise the contributions of its Honorary Consuls in supporting Singapore’s diplomatic relations, assisting citizens overseas and promoting business connections. Minister of State Sim Ann, Minister of State Gan Siow Huang and Minister Alvin Tan hosted the gathering, which highlighted the role of Honorary Consuls in representing Singapore and maintaining connections with communities in their respective countries.

Honorary Consuls serve as an important part of Singapore’s overseas network, helping Singaporeans with consular matters and facilitating connections between Singapore and other countries. Their responsibilities also include opening opportunities for Singapore businesses, engaging local communities and advocating for Singapore in their respective countries.
Although they operate alongside their own professional and personal commitments, Honorary Consuls contribute their time and local knowledge to support Singapore’s interests abroad. Their networks and understanding of local conditions help facilitate engagement with individuals, organisations and potential partners in countries where Singapore may not have an embassy or permanent diplomatic presence.
The importance of these relationships was highlighted through experiences during visits to Mexico, Colombia and Chile in recent years. During these visits, Honorary Consuls provided local knowledge, helped arrange meetings and established connections with people and opportunities that might otherwise have been more difficult to access.
These contributions demonstrate how personal relationships and local networks support Singapore’s diplomatic outreach, particularly as a small country that cannot maintain an embassy or diplomatic presence in every part of the world.
Honorary Consuls also help extend Singapore’s reach by maintaining links with local communities and supporting engagement with businesses and other stakeholders. Their work complements Singapore’s formal diplomatic network and helps sustain relationships in countries where their local knowledge and connections are valuable.
The HCGM lunch provided an occasion to acknowledge the contributions of Honorary Consuls and their role as advocates for Singapore overseas. Their continued assistance supports consular services, business engagement and people-to-people connections, helping Singapore maintain friendships and working relationships with countries around the world.
