Singapore and Norway discuss ocean technology, maritime research and innovation at SNIC 2026.
Singapore and Norway explored opportunities to advance cooperation in ocean technology, research, innovation and ocean governance at the Singapore–Norway Innovation Conference (SNIC) 2026. Minister Alvin Tan attended the conference in person, six years after participating virtually in its inaugural edition during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The conference provided a platform to discuss the role of technology in creating new opportunities for the maritime sector, with discussions spanning developments from seabed exploration to space-based applications. Both countries share interests as maritime nations and recognise the potential of innovation to support ocean-related activities and sustainable development.
Singapore and Norway bring complementary strengths to the partnership. Norway has established expertise in ocean technology, while Singapore serves as a global maritime and innovation hub. Combining these capabilities offers opportunities for cooperation in research, technological development and ocean governance.
In his remarks, Minister Alvin Tan highlighted the importance of balancing technological innovation with effective governance. He noted that innovation creates new possibilities, while good governance provides the confidence needed to translate these opportunities into practical outcomes.
The conference also provided an opportunity to reflect on the development of Singapore–Norway engagement since the inaugural SNIC in 2020, when Minister Tan participated virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. His in-person attendance at the 2026 edition reflected the continuation of discussions between the two maritime nations on areas of shared interest.
As technology continues to expand the possibilities for ocean-related industries, Singapore and Norway are looking to take their partnership further through cooperation in research, innovation and governance. Their complementary capabilities provide a basis for continued engagement in advancing maritime technology and addressing emerging opportunities in the ocean sector.
