dnata, a global air and travel service provider, reduces its carbon footprint by 650 metric tonnes per year with cutting-edge cooling technology at Singapore’s Changi Airport
dnata, a prominent global air and travel services provider, has taken a significant step towards reducing its environmental impact by implementing an advanced chilled water and air conditioning system at its facilities in Singapore Changi Airport (SIN). Supplied by Kaer, a pioneer in Cooling as a Service (CaaS), this innovative system is set to revolutionize cooling operations.
Under the CaaS model, Kaer retrofitted the cooling systems at dnata’s cargo base and catering and support offices with a highly-efficient, low-Global Warming Potential (GWP) solution. The result has been a remarkable 54% reduction in energy consumption at the cargo base and a 35% reduction at the catering and support offices.
This initiative marks dnata’s continued commitment to sustainability, following the successful installation of 6,500 rooftop solar panels, which led to a 20% reduction in electricity-related carbon emissions. With the CaaS model in place, the facility will save an additional 650 tonnes of carbon annually, equivalent to the environmental benefit of 2,400 additional rooftop solar panels.
The carbon savings achieved through this new technology are substantial, equating to the greenhouse gas emissions of 530 petrol-powered cars for a year, or the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of 464 average homes for the same duration.
Charles Galloway, dnata’s Regional CEO, Airport Operations – Asia Pacific, expressed pride in the company’s role as an early adopter of low-GWP refrigerant technology, emphasizing the plans to expand CaaS initiatives across various operational areas.
Justin Taylor, Chief Executive Officer of Kaer, expressed excitement about dnata’s participation in the CaaS movement and emphasized the potential for further investments in low-carbon technology.
dnata is on track to achieve a 50% reduction in its carbon footprint and waste to landfill by 2030, in line with its green operations strategy. The company has committed $100 million to implement green technology and initiatives worldwide, focusing on infrastructure, green ground support solutions, and process improvement.
Currently, dnata serves over 50 airlines at Singapore Changi Airport with a team of 1,500 aviation professionals, handling more than 15,000 flights, providing over 3.75 million meals, and moving over 250,000 tonnes of cargo annually.
