Thai and Singaporean leaders pledge to enhance ties in high-tech industries, food security, and combat criminal networks during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summits.

On 9 October 2024, Thai Prime Minister H.E. Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa met with H.E. Mr. Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister of Singapore, on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summits to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation. The meeting focused on several key areas, including the digital economy, investment in high-tech industries, sustainability, and agriculture. Both nations agreed to increase trade in food products to bolster Singapore’s food security, and Thailand expressed its intention to join the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA), opening new opportunities for Thai entrepreneurs.

The leaders also addressed pressing security issues. Thailand and Singapore committed to working together in combating drug trafficking and online scam networks, with a shared focus on strengthening cross-border cooperation to tackle these criminal activities. This collaboration marks a significant step in ensuring regional safety and stability.

In addition, Prime Minister Wong commended Thailand’s efforts in promoting its soft power, particularly through Thai films and culture, which have gained popularity in Singapore and beyond. Both countries look forward to deeper cultural exchanges as they build on their longstanding ties.
