Leaders of ASEAN and India reviewed the progress of cooperation and adopted key joint statements to enhance digital transformation and regional stability during the 21st ASEAN-India Summit in Vientiane, Lao PDR.

Vientiane, Lao PDR, 10 September 2024 – The Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, participated in the 21st ASEAN-India Summit. The summit brought together the leaders of ASEAN member states and India to review the progress of ASEAN-India cooperation. Discussions focused on advancing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that is both meaningful and mutually beneficial, reflecting the continued commitment to deepen ties between the two regions.

During the meeting, the leaders reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. To solidify these efforts, they adopted the Joint Statement on Strengthening ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace, Stability, and Prosperity in the Region. This statement aligns with the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) and India’s Act East Policy (AEP), both of which highlight the importance of peace, stability, and cooperative development in the region.

In recognition of the transformative potential of technology, the leaders also addressed the digital divide and emphasized the importance of inclusive and sustainable development. As part of this focus, ASEAN and India adopted the Joint Statement on Advancing Digital Transformation, which seeks to foster digital connectivity and innovation throughout the region, enabling equitable access to digital opportunities for all.

The 21st ASEAN-India Summit underscores the shared vision of ASEAN and India for a stable, prosperous, and interconnected region. Both parties are committed to further collaboration in areas such as economic growth, security, and technological advancements, ensuring that their partnership continues to evolve to meet future challenges.
