Prime Minister underscores India’s initiatives in combating poverty and hunger during the ‘Fight Against Hunger and Poverty’ session at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, emphasising sustainable progress and inclusive development.
At the G20 Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered an address during the session on the ‘Fight Against Hunger and Poverty,’ underlining India’s significant strides in combating poverty and promoting sustainable development, a Heads of State and Government meeting currently taking place at the Museum of Modern Art from 18–19 November 2024.
The Prime Minister highlighted India’s achievements, including lifting 250 million people out of poverty through collective efforts. He emphasised the nation’s extensive support programmes, such as providing free rations to 800 million people, ensuring food and nutritional security for vulnerable populations, and pioneering affordable healthcare for the poor and elderly. Key initiatives for empowering women financially were also discussed, reflecting India’s commitment to inclusive progress.
In addressing food security and sustainability, the Prime Minister shared India’s focus on organic farming, popularising millets (referred to as Shree Anna in India), and developing climate-resilient crop varieties. These approaches, he noted, align with the dual principles of ‘Back to Basics’ and ‘March to Future,’ aiming to blend traditional practices with modern solutions.
The session underscored the importance of collaborative global action in tackling hunger and poverty. India’s contributions serve as a model for integrating large-scale welfare measures with sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring a resilient future for all.
