Johannesburg, South Africa – Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, participated in the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on 20 and 21 February 2025 at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg. The meeting, inaugurated by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, centred on the theme “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.”

During the two-day event, foreign ministers from G20 nations deliberated on critical global challenges, including inclusive economic growth, food security, and the role of artificial intelligence in sustainable development. These discussions aimed to foster international cooperation and formulate strategies to address these pressing issues.

On the sidelines of the summit, Dr Balakrishnan engaged in bilateral meetings with various counterparts. In a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar, both ministers exchanged insights on the evolving international order and global uncertainties. Dr Balakrishnan noted, “We meet regularly, and it is always a pleasure to hear his deep insights about the evolving international order and global uncertainties.”

In discussions with European Commission High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, Dr Balakrishnan highlighted the robust economic ties between Singapore and the European Union. He emphasized their shared commitment to an open and rules-based multilateral system, stating, “We discussed ways to strengthen economic ties and advance green and digital transitions in Singapore and the EU.”

Dr Balakrishnan also expressed gratitude to South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, for hosting the event. He remarked on the strong bilateral relations between Singapore and South Africa, underpinned by economic collaboration and mutual interests. “Singapore supports South Africa’s G20 Presidency, and we look forward to strengthening our partnership,” he affirmed.

The G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting served as a platform for nations to engage in meaningful dialogue, addressing complex global issues through collective action and reinforcing multilateral cooperation.
