Young diplomats from Asia-Pacific and Europe gained insights into Singapore’s public diplomacy and multicultural society.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) co-organised the 13th ASEF Public Diplomacy Training (ASEFPDT) programme earlier this month in Singapore, bringing together 27 young diplomats from the Asia-Pacific and Europe.
During the programme, participants received briefings from MFA and the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) to deepen their understanding of Singapore’s public diplomacy approaches. They also took part in a fireside chat with Ambassador-at-Large Professor Tommy Koh and engaged in informal discussions with MFA officers, providing opportunities for dialogue and professional exchange.

The programme also featured a panel discussion where Singapore ASEF Governor Professor Leo Tan shared perspectives on his role as an ASEF Governor. The panel included contributions from the Swiss Ambassador, Belgian Ambassador to Singapore, and Director of the European Union Centre, Dr Yeo Lay Hwee, offering insights into Asia-Europe cooperation and diplomacy.
Beyond formal sessions, participants were introduced to Singapore’s multicultural and multiracial society through visits to Joo Chiat, Dunman Food Centre, the Singapore River, and Gardens by the Bay. As the host country of ASEF, Singapore provided a platform for young diplomats to network, exchange ideas, and strengthen Asia-Europe ties. MFA expressed its appreciation for the participants’ engagement and looked forward to continued dialogue and cooperation among ASEF members in the coming year.
