Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong emphasises logistics growth, technology, and sustainability at Maersk’s new automated facility launch on 18 March 2026.
Gan Kim Yong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of Maersk’s World Gateway II in Singapore on 18 March 2026. The event marked the launch of a major automated logistics facility by A.P. Moller – Maersk.
Mr Gan congratulated Maersk on the completion of the 1.1 million square feet distribution centre, noting that it doubles the company’s logistics footprint in Singapore to more than 2 million square feet. Mr Gan said the project reflects a strong and growing partnership between Singapore and one of the world’s leading logistics companies.
Mr Gan highlighted Singapore’s position as a global hub for goods movement, supported by infrastructure such as the Port of Singapore and Changi Airport. Mr Gan noted that these facilities connect hundreds of global ports and serve as major cargo gateways in Asia.
Mr Gan also spoke about the long-standing relationship between Singapore and Maersk, which dates back to 1929. Mr Gan said Singapore is now Maersk’s second-largest base globally, employing more than 1,500 people and hosting over 140 vessels under its registry.
The new facility builds on the earlier World Gateway I, opened in 2016 by Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Mr Tharman. Mr Gan said both facilities strengthen Singapore’s role as an intermodal logistics hub, supporting the distribution of high-value goods across Asia.
Mr Gan also addressed global challenges, noting that supply chains are facing disruptions due to geopolitical tensions and conflicts affecting shipping routes. Mr Gan stressed that Singapore must continue investing in infrastructure and capabilities to remain competitive.
Mr Gan pointed to future developments such as Tuas Port and Changi Airport Terminal 5, which will enhance Singapore’s logistics and cargo capacity.
Mr Gan highlighted the role of advanced technologies at World Gateway II, including automation and robotics, which improve efficiency and create new job opportunities. Mr Gan noted that the facility is expected to generate over 500 roles in operations, engineering, and supply chain management.
Mr Gan also emphasised sustainability, stating that the logistics sector must reduce carbon emissions and adopt greener practices. Mr Gan noted that features such as solar panels and energy-efficient systems at the facility support this goal.
Mr Gan concluded by reaffirming Singapore’s commitment to strengthening its logistics ecosystem, embracing innovation, and deepening partnerships with global companies like Maersk to ensure continued growth in global trade.
