REGIONAL EXPERTS GATHER IN SINGAPORE TO ADVANCE TECHNOLOGY COOPERATION AND STRATEGIC ENGAGEMENT
A regional workshop titled Advancing South Korea–ASEAN Science and Technology Cooperation will be held at the NUS East Asian Institute, located within the National University of Singapore Bukit Timah Campus.
Hosted by the Korea Centre at the East Asian Institute and funded by the Korea Foundation, the event is jointly organised with the University of Sydney and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. The workshop will run from 9:00am to 4:30pm, bringing together academics, policymakers and industry experts to examine opportunities for enhanced collaboration in science and technology.
The event will feature H.E. Mr. Hong Jin-wook, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Singapore, as Guest of Honour, underscoring the growing importance of bilateral and regional cooperation.
The workshop will focus on South Korea’s expanding engagement with Southeast Asia, particularly in the context of the Indo-Pacific. Discussions will centre on how the Republic of Korea can leverage its technological capabilities and research partnerships to strengthen ties with ASEAN member states, while addressing shared challenges in innovation, development and security.
Key themes include the transfer and absorption of critical technologies across countries at different stages of development, and how existing research and trade relationships can be strengthened to support long-term regional cooperation. Participants will also explore how technological collaboration can contribute to broader strategic engagement, especially amid evolving global dynamics such as supply chain disruptions and shifting geopolitical alignments.
The programme will further examine the role of middle and small powers in fostering mutually beneficial partnerships, particularly in an international environment shaped by great power competition and changing economic conditions. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the workshop aims to identify practical pathways for enhancing cooperation and building resilience through science and technology partnerships.
