
The discussions focused on strengthening institutional capacity and supporting Timor-Leste’s integration into ASEAN.
ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General for the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Ms Astanah Abdul Aziz met Prime Minister Mr Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão at the Government Palace in Dili during a three-day visit to Timor-Leste. The meeting supported ASEAN’s continued efforts to strengthen Timor-Leste’s institutional capacity and advance its integration into the regional bloc.
The discussions centred on political, security, and institutional development, with a focus on enhancing the country’s readiness to participate effectively in ASEAN’s decision-making processes and regional mechanisms. The visit also included meetings with Timorese institutions involving officials from the ASEAN Secretariat and representatives from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Brunei Darussalam.
Prime Minister Xanana welcomed ASEAN’s continued support in strengthening Timor-Leste’s state institutions and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to building the capacity and expertise needed to contribute actively to the organisation. The visit also supported Timor-Leste’s preparations for its planned ASEAN Chairmanship in 2029.
