Marking Pan-African Women’s Day, the High Commission of South Africa in Singapore convened key women stakeholders to strengthen partnerships and advance preparations for the 4th Edition of South Africa Focus Week, taking place from 21–26 September 2026.
IN Diplomacy Editor-in-Chief, Ms Nomita Dhar, attended a Pan-African Women’s Day engagement hosted by the High Commission of South Africa in Singapore on 31 July 2026, where key women stakeholders gathered as part of preparations for the 4th Edition of South Africa Focus Week, scheduled to take place from 21 to 26 September 2026. The engagement underscored the High Commission’s commitment to promoting women’s leadership as a cornerstone of effective diplomacy, sustainable development, and stronger bilateral partnerships between South Africa and Singapore.
The meeting brought together women from diverse sectors to explore collaborative opportunities that will contribute to the success of South Africa Focus Week. While the full details of the partnerships and collaborative initiatives will be announced in the coming weeks, the discussions reflected a shared commitment to fostering innovation, economic cooperation, and inclusive engagement through meaningful participation by women.
The occasion drew inspiration from the words of Liberian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Leymah Gbowee, who famously stated, “Women matter in all matters.” The sentiment aligns with extensive global evidence showing that women’s leadership strengthens governance, promotes more inclusive decision-making, contributes to sustainable peace, improves human development outcomes, and supports inclusive economic growth. By empowering women to lead across sectors, societies become more resilient, equitable, and prosperous.
Holding the engagement on Pan-African Women’s Day carried particular significance. The annual observance commemorates the establishment of the Pan-African Women’s Organization in 1962 and honours the vital role African women have played in the continent’s liberation, peacebuilding, development, and regional integration. It also reinforces the Pan-African belief that Africa’s continued progress is intrinsically linked to the empowerment and advancement of women.
Looking ahead to South Africa Focus Week 2026, the High Commission reaffirmed that women are not merely participants but strategic partners in advancing South Africa’s economic diplomacy, deepening bilateral cooperation with Singapore, and supporting the implementation of the African Union Agenda 2063. Their leadership will remain central to ensuring that the event serves as an inclusive platform for trade, investment, innovation, partnerships, and sustainable development.
