The newly appointed Minister of State Alvin Tan reaffirmed his commitment to advancing Singapore’s interests amid an evolving global landscape
Minister of State Alvin Tan officially assumed office at Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), marking the start of his new role in supporting Singapore’s foreign policy and international engagement. His appointment comes as Singapore continues to navigate an increasingly complex global environment characterised by geopolitical uncertainty, shifting trade dynamics, and evolving supply chains.
Welcoming colleagues and stakeholders as he began his tenure at the ministry, Mr Tan reflected on the changing international landscape and the importance of safeguarding Singapore’s interests as a trade-dependent nation. He noted that the global order is evolving, with increasing volatility, trade fragmentation, and the reconfiguration of supply chains presenting fresh challenges for Singapore.
Drawing on his previous experience at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), Mr Tan said he had worked to strengthen Singapore’s business, trade, and investment relationships with partners around the world. He expressed his commitment to continuing these efforts in his new role at MFA by advancing Singapore’s international partnerships and supporting the country’s foreign policy objectives.
Mr Tan also highlighted the central role of Singaporeans in the ministry’s work, acknowledging the dedication of MFA officers serving both at home and abroad. He said he had witnessed first-hand the commitment of Singapore’s diplomats in protecting the nation’s interests, advancing its priorities, and assisting Singaporeans overseas.
“I’ve witnessed firsthand how MFA diplomats at home and abroad have dedicated themselves to safeguarding Singapore’s interests, advancing our priorities, and caring for Singaporeans,” Mr Tan said. He added that he looked forward to serving Singapore in his new capacity at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As he begins his tenure, Mr Tan is expected to contribute to Singapore’s efforts to strengthen international partnerships, uphold the country’s strategic interests, and navigate an increasingly dynamic global environment through active diplomacy and engagement.
