PM Lawrence Wong highlights longstanding friendship and opportunities for closer Singapore-Thailand cooperation
Singapore Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong highlighted the longstanding friendship between Singapore and Thailand and reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation during an official dinner hosted by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul in Bangkok on 2 September 2026. The dinner followed the first Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat between the two Prime Ministers.
In his toast, Prime Minister Wong thanked Prime Minister Anutin for his hospitality and welcomed the opportunity to return to Thailand for the Leaders’ Retreat. He said the two sides had held productive discussions involving both Leaders and their respective Ministers, noting that bilateral relations were “in very good shape” and that both countries should aim higher in taking their partnership forward.
Prime Minister Wong also highlighted the participation of business leaders from Singapore and Thailand at the official dinner. He said their face-to-face engagement would help forge closer cooperation and create new opportunities between the two countries.
“Singapore has every confidence in Thailand’s economy,” Prime Minister Wong said, noting that Singapore had consistently been among the top investors in Thailand. He added that Singapore looked forward to further opportunities in the years ahead and remained committed to deepening the partnership between the two countries.
The Prime Minister also reflected on the historical foundations of Singapore-Thailand relations. Singapore and Thailand will mark 61 years of diplomatic ties in September 2026, while their friendship dates back further. He recalled that Singapore was the first stop of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn’s overseas visit in 1871, with the bronze elephant presented by the King still standing at Singapore’s Old Parliament House.
Prime Minister Wong also referred to the visit by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn, who led a delegation on a study visit to Singapore in August 2026. He described these exchanges, together with the Leaders’ Retreat, as part of the continuing ties between the two countries and their peoples.
The toast concluded with Prime Minister Wong inviting guests to raise their glasses to His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, the health and success of Prime Minister Anutin and Khun Thananon, the peace and prosperity of Thailand, and the enduring friendship between Singapore and Thailand.
