The meeting explored technical assistance for Timor-Leste’s ASEAN economic and trade integration.
Timor-Leste’s Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Mr. Agio Pereira, met with Ms. Didina Coelho da Silva, a legal expert from the International Trade Centre (ITC), on 23 October 2026 at the Government Palace in Dili. The introductory meeting focused on the ITC’s ongoing support for Timor-Leste’s economic and trade integration.
During the discussion, the ITC outlined its technical assistance programmes, particularly its efforts to help Timor-Leste fulfil commitments under ASEAN economic and trade agreements. These initiatives focused on developing national expertise and improving institutional readiness for regional trade participation.
The meeting also addressed Timor-Leste’s preparations for the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), including technical assessments of the country’s readiness. Both parties exchanged information on existing cooperation and the importance of institutional capacity building for Timor-Leste’s participation in ASEAN’s economic and trade mechanisms.
The ITC, a joint agency of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the United Nations through the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), is currently implementing a European Union-funded project supporting Timor-Leste’s regional integration and trade development. The programme provides technical assistance to develop the country’s trade capabilities and institutional expertise, supporting its participation in regional and international markets.
