Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong commends the contributions of Central Singapore CDC and outlines their crucial role in building stronger communities.
In a significant ceremony held on 25th September 2023, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong addressed the appointment of the 11th Central Singapore Community Development Council (CDC) Council. The event marked a momentous occasion as attendees gathered physically, in contrast to the previous appointment ceremony, which was held virtually due to Covid restrictions.
The Prime Minister emphasized the pivotal role played by CDCs as regional offices, closely collaborating with grassroots divisions and social service agencies. Their mission, aptly summarized as Aggregate, Build, and Connect (ABC), encapsulates the tireless efforts invested in bringing communities together, providing care for the vulnerable, upskilling residents, and aligning with national priorities.
Central CDC’s contributions in recent years have been laudable. Collaborations with partners like UOB and StarHub resulted in impactful initiatives such as the ‘My Digital Bootcamp’ and ‘Junior Stars’ programs, benefiting thousands of disadvantaged children with vital learning opportunities. The ‘Give and Take Markets’ initiative, in conjunction with over 50 partners, offered essential items and services to over 3,500 families, significantly alleviating their cost of living.
Through the ‘Silver Homes’ program, Central CDC and its partners contributed to improving living conditions for senior citizens. Sustainability Workshops and the 10th Purple Parade exemplified the district’s commitment to environmental consciousness and inclusivity, respectively.
National initiatives were not left behind, as the CDC Vouchers Scheme provided substantial support to over a million households in managing living expenses, while also bolstering local businesses. The SkillsFuture movement gained momentum under Central CDC’s stewardship, with over 800 SkillsFuture Advice workshops reaching out to more than 44,000 residents.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong expressed confidence in the continued dedication of the five CDCs to building strong communities and addressing residents’ needs. He commended Mayor Denise Phua’s active leadership and acknowledged the support of partners like Far East Organization, StarHub, Temasek Foundation, UOB, and others in advancing the ‘Better Life’ initiative.
The Prime Minister extended his commendations to the 64 District Councillors for their commitment to community leadership and encouraged them to share their inspiring stories in the Council. He concluded with warm congratulations to the Central Singapore CDC’s 11th Council, expressing his best wishes for their upcoming term.
