The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) forges enhanced ties with Chinese maritime partners, focusing on digitalization, decarbonization, talent development, and information exchange.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has taken significant steps to bolster bilateral maritime cooperation with China. In a series of strategic moves, MPA signed three Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with key regional maritime administrations and partners in China. These agreements are aimed at advancing collaboration in crucial areas such as digitalization, decarbonization, talent development, and information exchange.

These landmark MoUs were formally established at two significant events: the Port Authorities Roundtable 2023 held in Shanghai, and the 3rd Global Sustainability Transport Forum in Beijing.

The first MoU, inked between MPA and the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, signifies a commitment to strengthening port and maritime connections between two of the world’s largest ports. This collaboration will facilitate mutual learning through extensive information exchange on port and shipping developments, maritime policies, regulations, as well as training and research initiatives. Moreover, both parties are set to embark on joint ventures in digitalization and decarbonization solutions for shipping and port development.

Another vital partnership was forged with the Tianjin Port and Shipping Authority (TPSA). This agreement focuses on critical issues surrounding maritime digitalization and decarbonization, while also emphasizing the exchange of valuable insights on shipping development, regulatory frameworks, port expansions, and maritime training. The collaboration is poised to stimulate exchanges in maritime talent and provide a platform for cooperative efforts in maritime research and development.

In a strategic move towards sustainability, MPA entered into an MoU with the China Classification Society (CCS). This agreement aims to pioneer efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by exploring the use of zero or near-zero emission marine fuels and marine battery technology. Additionally, both entities plan to spearhead innovation in smart ship technologies through collaborative ventures with researchers, industry players, and maritime startups.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) remains dedicated to its mission of developing Singapore as a premier global hub port and an international maritime center. By championing digitalization and decarbonization efforts on regional and international platforms, MPA continues to play a pivotal role in the growth and development of Singapore’s port and maritime landscape.
