DPM Lawrence Wong emphasizes the importance of harmony and combating extremism at the Religious Rehabilitation Group’s event, also marking the naming of the Ustaz Ali Haji Mohamed Auditorium.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Lawrence Wong, delivered a heartfelt speech at the Religious Rehabilitation Group’s (RRG) Annual Iftar, held at Khadijah Mosque on April 1, 2024. The event also celebrated the naming of the Ustaz Ali Haji Mohamed Auditorium, honoring the late chairman of Khadijah Mosque and co-founder of the RRG. In attendance were RRG co-chairmen, ministers, religious leaders, and distinguished guests, uniting to break fast and reflect on the themes of peace, harmony, and community support.

Wong’s speech highlighted the significance of Ramadan as a time for reflection and gratitude, acknowledging the peaceful coexistence enjoyed in Singapore amidst a backdrop of global unrest. He warned of the growing dangers in the international arena, characterized by armed conflicts, power competitions, and a shift away from cooperation towards nationalism. Wong emphasized Singapore’s role in supporting global peace efforts, including aid to Palestinian civilians and advocating for a two-state solution.

The Deputy Prime Minister praised the RRG for its 20-year effort in deterring radical ideologies and fostering inter-religious harmony. He recounted success stories of individuals who, through RRG’s intervention, redirected their lives towards positive contributions. Wong underscored the expanded role of RRG in community outreach, including digital platforms like TikTok, to spread messages of peace and social cohesion.

Highlighting the event’s significance, Wong paid tribute to Ustaz Ali Haji Mohamed, whose legacy continues to inspire community leadership and commitment to racial and religious harmony. The newly named auditorium serves as a reminder of his contributions to Singapore’s unity.

In conclusion, Wong called for continued efforts to maintain Singapore’s societal cohesion in the face of global and local challenges. He stressed the collective responsibility of all Singaporeans to uphold the nation’s values of unity in diversity, and to work together towards a harmonious and inclusive future.
