A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cooperation in the Future of Mobility was signed on September 27, 2023, between the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Singapore and the Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China. This significant agreement signifies a mutual commitment to advancing collaboration in the field of transportation and mobility.

Signatories and Occasion

The MOU was inked by Mr. Chee Hong Tat, Acting Minister for Transport, Singapore, and Mr. Li Xiaopeng, Minister of Transport, China. The ceremony took place during Mr. Chee’s official visit to Beijing from September 24 to 27, 2023, where he participated in the Global Sustainable Transport Forum. Also in attendance were officials from the Ministry of Transport and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Focus Areas of Cooperation

Mr. Chee and Mr. Li engaged in substantive discussions aimed at fortifying bilateral ties between Singapore and China. Key areas of focus included the safe deployment of automated driving vehicles, electrification of vehicles for both public and private transport, exploration of sustainable fuels for the maritime and aviation sectors, as well as the augmentation of connectivity between Singapore and China.

Maritime and Port Authority’s Additional Collaborations

In tandem with the MOU, the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore entered into separate Memorandums of Understanding with the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, the Tianjin Port and Shipping Authority, and the China Classification Society. These agreements are designed to foster deeper partnerships in realms such as digitalization, decarbonization, talent development, and information exchange.

This milestone MOU represents a significant stride towards enhanced cooperation in the realm of future mobility, paving the way for innovation, sustainability, and connectivity between Singapore and China. Both nations are poised to reap the benefits of this collaborative effort in the years to come.
