Dr Amy Khor leads the Singapore delegation at the 33rd IMO Assembly, discussing key maritime issues and seeking re-election to the IMO Council

SINGAPORE’S Senior Minister of State for Transport and Sustainability, Dr Amy Khor, will spearhead the country’s representation at the 33rd Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly in London, United Kingdom. The event, scheduled from November 27 to December 1, 2023, brings together ministers and senior officials worldwide to address crucial maritime issues.

Established in 1948, the IMO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, serves as the global authority for setting standards related to the safety, security, and environmental performance of international shipping. With 175 member states, the IMO Assembly convenes biennially to elect a 40-member Council and discuss matters pertaining to maritime safety, pollution prevention, and regulatory frameworks for the shipping industry.

At the 33rd IMO Assembly, the agenda will include discussions on maritime digitalization, decarbonization, and technical cooperation. The assembly is expected to approve the IMO’s work program and budget, along with adopting its Strategic Plan for the six-year period from 2024 to 2029.

Singapore, an active IMO member since 1966 and a Council member since 1993, will seek re-election to the IMO Council for the 2024-2025 biennium. The country has consistently contributed to the IMO’s work, holding leadership positions and actively participating in global maritime leadership training through the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Academy.

During her visit, Dr Khor will engage with counterparts from other IMO member states, including discussions with Mr Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of the IMO, and Mr Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General elect of the IMO, focusing on key transport issues. Accompanying Dr Khor are officials from the Ministry of Transport and MPA.
