Iconic Indian cinema villains Ranjeet, Gulshan Grover, Raza Murad, and Kiran Kumar delve into the art of portraying villains, emphasizing their crucial role in films

Goa, 27 November 2023 – The renowned villains of Indian cinema, including Ranjeet, Gulshan Grover, Raza Murad, and Kiran Kumar, took center stage at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 54 in an insightful In-Conversation session titled ‘The Villains – Leaving a Lasting Impression.’ The event, held at Kala Academy, Panaji, within the prestigious film festival’s sidelines, attracted a full house audience.

Addressing the gathering, Raza Murad emphasized the pivotal role villains play in films, stating, “Villains add flavor to a film and play a very vital role. Films are incomplete without a villain.”

Gulshan Grover, reflecting on his preparation for villainous roles, shared, “When I play the role of a villain in a film, my belief, my thoughts have no significance. I am the person that the script demands.”

Kiran Kumar, shedding light on audience expectations, asserted, “We are entertainers, not actors. Our job is to entertain those who sit from the front to the last row in a theatre. The job of a villain is to ensure that the hero in the film gets portrayed as a superhero.”

In discussing the use of profane language by villains, Kiran Kumar stated, “If required, one should not shy away from using it.” He added that such language can help viewers understand the character’s region and effectively convey the role in the film.

Ranjeet offered his perspective on portraying a villain, saying, “I believe one can portray themselves as a villain even without the use of profane language. I can do so with just my acting alone.” Reflecting on his experiences, he added, “Yes, I have played the role of a crude villain but never an uncouth one.”

Recognizing the importance of costumes in character portrayal, Raza Murad commented, “Costume is essential for character build-up. It enhances the role a person is playing. However, one must always remember that costume will always be an accessory and will not work if one is not talented enough.”
