Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s visit to Brunei from January 13 to 15, 2024, marked a significant diplomatic engagement, including attending the royal wedding and reinforcing the enduring relationship between the two nations.
Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, accompanied by his wife and a delegation comprising Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean and Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, visited Brunei Darussalam from January 13 to 15, 2024. The purpose of the visit was to participate in the wedding celebrations of His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri Anisha Rosnah binti Adam. The invitation for the visit came from His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
One of the highlights of the visit was the Royal Wedding Ceremony (Bersanding Ceremony) held on January 14, 2024. Prime Minister Lee and his delegation extended Singapore’s warmest congratulations to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha, as well as to the newlyweds.
On January 15, 2024, Prime Minister Lee had an audience with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. During this meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the enduring relationship between Singapore and Brunei. Prime Minister Lee expressed gratitude for the Sultan’s steadfast support over the decades and conveyed confidence in the continued growth of the partnership under the next generation of leaders.
During his stay in Brunei, Prime Minister Lee also had a separate audience with the King of Bhutan, His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, on the sidelines of the royal wedding. He congratulated the Bhutanese King on the successful conclusion of Bhutan’s General Elections on January 9, 2024. The leaders discussed opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation across various domains.
The visit concluded with Prime Minister Lee and the delegation attending the Royal Banquet on January 15, 2024, before returning to Singapore.
