The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore marked the 76th Independence Day with a vibrant ceremony, emphasizing unity and the theme “Let’s Build a New Country.”

On February 4th, 2024, the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore commemorated the 76th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence at the Chevrons Auditorium. The event saw a gathering of approximately 250 members from the Sri Lankan expatriate community and friends of Sri Lanka, demonstrating the strong bonds and cultural ties within the diaspora.

The celebration began with High Commissioner Senarath Dissanayake hoisting the National Flag, followed by the rendition of the National Anthem. A poignant two-minute silence was observed, honoring the sacrifices made for the nation’s freedom, unity, sovereignty, and integrity. This moment of remembrance highlighted the deep respect for those who fought for the country’s independence and sovereignty.

The event was notable for its inclusivity, with representation from the Sinhala, Tamil, and Muslim communities, as well as from various Sri Lankan associations in Singapore and migrant workers. The traditional lighting of the oil lamp by these community representatives symbolized unity and the collective aspiration for a prosperous future.

A key feature of the ceremony was the multi-faith religious observances, which included Buddhist, Hindu, Islam, and Christian practices. These observances called for blessings upon Sri Lanka and its people, reflecting the country’s rich tapestry of religious diversity.

The Independence Day messages from the President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka were delivered in Sinhala, Tamil, and English, ensuring that the message of hope and unity was accessible to all attendees.

High Commissioner Dissanayake’s address focused on the theme of the celebration, “Let’s Build a New Country.” He highlighted the vital role of the Sri Lankan expatriate community in nation-building and acknowledged their contributions through the establishment of the Office for Overseas Sri Lankan Affairs (OOSLA). The High Commissioner’s call to action for Sri Lankans in Singapore to contribute to their homeland’s development underscored a collective responsibility towards national progress.

The event also featured engaging video clips that showcased the activities of OOSLA, the Port-City project, and the promotion of Sri Lanka’s tourism and Ceylon Tea, adding a dynamic element to the celebration.

The ceremony concluded with the National Anthem played in Tamil, followed by a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast, featuring milk rice, sweetmeats, and Sri Lankan tea. This cultural feast provided a taste of home for the expatriates and a warm conclusion to the festivities.
