United States Senator Todd Young (R-Indiana) visited Singapore from 24 to 27 March 2024, engaging in significant discussions with top Singaporean officials, including Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. The talks revolved around global and regional developments and reiterated the deep-rooted, excellent ties between the U.S. and Singapore, with a particular focus on cooperation in critical and emerging technologies.
Senator Young’s visit aligns with the United States National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology (NSCEB)’s trip to Singapore, where he serves as a Commissioner. This visit facilitated a joint meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong, emphasizing the robust potential for collaboration in the biotechnology sector. Areas highlighted for potential cooperation include research and development and workforce development, underscoring the strategic importance of biotechnologies in the bilateral relationship.
Additionally, the NSCEB delegation was hosted for breakfast by Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan and for tea by Minister for Defence Dr. Ng Eng Hen, further cementing the partnership between the two nations and exploring new avenues for cooperation in the field of biotechnology.
