The Embassy of Indonesia collaborates with the ASEAN Alliance on Carbon Market to discuss scaling impacts through carbon market initiatives in Southeast Asia.

In collaboration with the ASEAN Alliance on Carbon Market (AACM), the Embassy of Indonesia in Singapore hosted the AACM Executive Roundtable Discussion on Scaling Impacts through Carbon Market in Southeast Asia on 18 April 2024. The Roundtable brought together more than 75 business leaders, Singapore Government representatives, carbon market experts, and environmental enthusiasts. Among the topics discussed were the top challenges and opportunities for carbon market projects, AACM’s plan to advocate the development of carbon markets, the importance of policy advocacy to promote scaling of carbon markets, and key trends in 2024 and beyond regarding investor and corporate buyers’ demands on carbon offset.

Ambassador Suryo Pratomo expressed Indonesia’s delight in witnessing the continuation of positive legacy projects from Indonesia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2023. He commended AACM’s efforts to establish the first regional ecosystem and promote scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets across ASEAN, as well as compliance markets in the region. Other speakers included Dharsono Hartono, Permanent Chair of AACM and CEO of PT Rimba Makmur Utama, Kavita Prakash-Mani from The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM), Ivan Mozharov from Offset8 Capital, Rueban Manokara from the National Climate Change Secretariat, Maria Eugenia Filmanovic from Abatable, and Hastin Dumadi, Minister Counsellor – Economic Department, Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Singapore.

To advocate further development of carbon markets in the region, the AACM and Abatable signed a Partnership Agreement during the meeting. The agreement aims to support AACM’s policy advocacy work, focusing on two upcoming reports on carbon markets in ASEAN and Indonesia, led by Abatable’s policy specialists. The ASEAN report is expected to be launched at the NY Climate Week, while the Indonesia report will be launched at the International Sustainability Forum (ISF) in Jakarta in September 2024.
