Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong highlighted the significant advancements and achievements of the Singapore Sports School during its 20th Anniversary and Awards Night on April 26, 2024.
At the celebratory event held at the Singapore Sports School (SSP), Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Lawrence Wong, delivered a speech recognizing the school’s progress and the remarkable achievements of its student-athletes. Wong, who previously visited the school for its 10th anniversary, applauded the strategic advancements made since then, including the establishment of the National Youth Sports Institute aimed at bolstering the nation’s sports ecosystem.
During his address, Wong highlighted the accomplishments of SSP alumni, such as Shanti Pereira and Loh Kean Yew, and celebrated the recent successes of young athletes like Izaac Quek Yong and Amirah Sahrin in regional and world championships. He commended the school for not only fostering athletic excellence but also ensuring the academic progression of its graduates.
The Deputy Prime Minister also discussed ongoing governmental support for sports, citing increased funding and initiatives from this year’s budget that support athletes and major sports events in Singapore. He announced plans to introduce new scholarships and expand support programs for athletes, emphasizing a continued commitment to nurturing talent and supporting athletes throughout their careers and beyond.
