Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong urges collective efforts to tackle mental health issues and strengthen resilience at the Samaritans of Singapore’s anniversary event.
On May 4, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong delivered an impactful speech at the Samaritans of Singapore’s (SOS) 55th Anniversary Charity Gala Dinner. He emphasized the importance of mental health awareness and lauded SOS for its unwavering dedication over the years.
Having served as Patron of SOS since 2011, DPM Wong acknowledged the organization’s tremendous journey from operating a basic telephone hotline to offering comprehensive support services. These include a 24-hour telephone and text hotline, email befriending, counseling, and training for para-counselors to assist individuals facing suicide risks and mental health challenges. The SOS also extends its support to families affected by the loss of a loved one to suicide.
DPM Wong thanked SOS’s staff, volunteers, and donors for their unwavering commitment. He called for continued generosity in donations and time to support the organization’s vital work.
Highlighting mental health as a national priority, Wong outlined several strategies, including addressing the challenges associated with excessive screen time and social media use. He noted how a lack of free play and increasing exposure to screens might contribute to the global rise in mental health issues among young people.
Wong suggested considering additional safeguards for children and emphasized the importance of strong parental boundaries regarding technology. He also urged more significant collaboration between government, parents, and tech platforms to implement tighter age restrictions.
Wong emphasized resilience-building capabilities, encouraging the adoption of healthy practices like arts and sports participation, social support networks, and positive parental involvement. He urged the community to intervene upstream to reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues and foster open conversations.
To better coordinate national efforts, Wong announced the creation of the National Mental Health Office to build partnerships and share ideas that advance the country’s mental health agenda.
In his closing remarks, DPM Wong recognized the long journey ahead in addressing mental health challenges but expressed optimism, urging collective efforts to enhance Singapore’s mental health and well-being.
