President Tharman Shanmugaratnam participated in the ceremonial Changing of Guards at the Istana, highlighting the tradition’s rich history and dedication of Singapore’s Armed Forces.
President Tharman Shanmugaratnam was present at the Changing of Guards (COG) Ceremony at the Istana, a monthly tradition held on the first Sunday of every month. The ceremony features a symbolic parade where incoming Guards, led by the SAF Silent Precision Drill Squad, march to the Istana’s main entrance to relieve the outgoing Guards, signifying a handover of duties.
Accompanied by musical performances from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Band, the ceremony offers a display of precision and discipline, showcasing the ceremonial prowess of the SAF. This tradition dates back to 1959, coinciding with Encik Yusof Bin Ishak taking office as the Yang Di-Pertuan Negara, and originally involved combat troops from the 1st Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment. It has since evolved, with the Istana Ceremonial Guards from the SAF’s Military Police Enforcement Unit now performing these duties.
Following the ceremony, President Shanmugaratnam took the opportunity to interact with members of the Istana Ceremonial Guards, the Silent Precision Drill Squad, and the SAF band. He expressed his gratitude for their steadfast commitment and service, acknowledging the importance of their roles in upholding a key piece of Singapore’s national heritage.
The Changing of the Guard Ceremony remains a significant event that not only reinforces the continuity of tradition but also highlights the disciplined spirit and dedication of Singapore’s military personnel.
