He expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and his team, highlighting the generational shift in leadership, as he is the first Prime Minister born after Singapore’s independence in 1965.
Wong emphasized the principles that have shaped Singapore: incorruptibility, meritocracy, multiracialism, justice, and equality. He acknowledged the foundational work of previous leaders like Mr. Lee Kuan Yew and Mr. Goh Chok Tong, and the importance of continuity with experienced ministers like Mr. Lee Hsien Loong remaining in the Cabinet.
He acknowledged the changing global landscape and the need for Singapore to adapt to a world marked by geopolitical tensions, protectionism, and nationalism. Emphasizing the country’s high international standing, Wong stressed the importance of maintaining strong relationships and advancing Singapore’s interests globally.
Wong underscored the nation’s ability to overcome challenges through unity and mutual respect among its diverse population. He reflected on the collective effort during the COVID-19 pandemic, which reinforced his belief in the strength of working together as “Team Singapore.”
The Prime Minister introduced the “Forward Singapore” initiative, which aims to realize the aspirations of Singaporeans by fostering a fairer, more inclusive society. He highlighted the need for continuous improvement in education, housing, healthcare, and transport systems, while addressing the challenges posed by technological advancement and an aging population.
In closing, Wong called for unity and collective effort to build a better Singapore, promising to serve with dedication and to seek innovative solutions for the nation’s progress.
