The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore, in collaboration with the People’s Bank of Sri Lanka, organised an awareness programme on financial literacy for Sri Lankan migrant workers.

An awareness program aimed at educating Sri Lankan migrant workers in Singapore about foreign remittances and foreign currency accounts took place at the High Commission of Sri Lanka on 12th May 12th 2024. Organised in collaboration with the People’s Bank of Sri Lanka, the event was attended by over 100 participants. 

High Commissioner Senarath Dissanayake acknowledged the significant contribution of the immigrants  to the Sri Lankan economy. He highlighted the challenges faced by Sri Lankan workers in Singapore due to high service charges imposed by remittance agencies and banks. The High Commissioner expressed gratitude to the People’s Bank of Sri Lanka for their timely collaboration in raising awareness among Sri Lankan migrant workers regarding overseas remittances.

During the programme, Assistant General Manager of the Foreign Customers Branch of the People’s Bank Ms. Aruni Liyanagunwardena, explained the advantages of sending foreign remittances through proper channels and maintaining personal foreign currency accounts in Sri Lankan banks. She also provided insights into new loan schemes and facilities introduced by the People’s Bank, specifically catering to migrant workers. The session concluded with a Q&A segment, allowing participants to seek clarifications from the People’s Bank representatives of and High Commission officials.

Following the event, the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore has undertaken discussions with banks and remittance agencies in Singapore to explore options for reducing remittance charges to Sri Lanka. This initiative reflects the commitment of the High Commission to address the challenges faced by Sri Lankan migrant workers and enhance their financial well-being.

This programme marks the second in a series of outreach initiatives conducted by the High Commission for Sri Lankan migrant workers in Singapore this year, highlighting the ongoing efforts to empower and support the migrant workers in navigating financial issues abroad.
