Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong delivered a speech at the groundbreaking of the Founders’ Memorial at Gardens by the Bay, honoring Singapore’s founding leaders and their journey to nationhood.
On June 5, 2024, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong addressed a gathering at Gardens by the Bay to commemorate the groundbreaking of the Founders’ Memorial. The memorial is dedicated to the leaders who guided Singapore to independence and shaped the nation into what it is today.
Honoring the Past
SM Lee emphasized the significance of remembering the struggles and triumphs of Singapore’s founding leaders. He highlighted how these leaders, including his father Lee Kuan Yew, overcame numerous challenges, such as colonialism, communism, and communalism, to build a strong, independent, and united Singapore. He reflected on the period after World War II when Singaporeans took their future into their own hands, leading to the formation of a self-governing state in 1959.
Journey to Independence
The speech revisited Singapore’s tumultuous journey to independence, detailing the intense political contests and ideological battles that shaped the nation. In 1963, Singapore merged with Malaysia, but significant differences led to Singapore’s separation in 1965, marking the beginning of its journey as a sovereign state. SM Lee praised the founding leaders for their courage and vision in navigating these critical periods, fostering values such as democracy, meritocracy, and multiracialism.
The Memorial’s Significance
Proposed in 2015 following the passing of Lee Kuan Yew, the Founders’ Memorial aims to honor the collective efforts of Singapore’s founding leaders. Designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates (Japan) and K2LD Architects (Singapore), the memorial will be located at Bay East Gardens, symbolizing Singapore’s transformation from a mudflat to a metropolis. SM Lee expressed gratitude to the many Singaporeans who contributed ideas for the memorial, as well as to the Founders’ Memorial Committee and its architects.
Looking Forward
The memorial is intended to serve as a space for reflection on Singapore’s nation-building journey, encouraging future generations to appreciate the values and sacrifices of the founding generation. SM Lee hopes it will inspire Singaporeans to continue striving for a harmonious and successful nation, built on the foundational values established by the pioneers.
