Prime Minister Lawrence Wong concluded his visit to Brunei on 12 June 2024 and is set to visit Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The visit underscores the strong diplomatic ties and cooperation between Singapore and these nations.
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong concluded his introductory visit to Brunei Darussalam today, and is set to travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for an introductory visit later this evening.
In Brunei, Prime Minister Wong, accompanied by Mrs. Wong and his delegation, was warmly received by His Royal Highness Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office of Brunei Darussalam, and Her Royal Highness Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah, at the Brunei International Airport.
The delegation had a royal audience with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, and Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha at the Istana Nurul Iman. His Majesty hosted an official lunch in their honor, where Prime Minister Wong expressed gratitude for the steadfast support Brunei has shown since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1984. He reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to strengthening the special relationship between the two countries and thanked His Majesty for supporting Singapore Armed Forces’ training in Brunei. Additionally, Wong highlighted the importance of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement, which has bolstered bilateral financial and economic cooperation since 1967.
Prime Minister Wong also met with Crown Prince Billah and Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah. He expressed anticipation for welcoming them to Singapore for the 10th Young Leaders’ Programme (YLP) later this year, emphasizing the program’s role in deepening the bonds between younger leaders from both nations.
During his visit to Malaysia, Prime Minister Wong will meet with and be hosted to lunch by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Separate meetings with Deputy Prime Ministers Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof are also planned.
Prime Minister Wong will be accompanied by Mrs. Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, and Minister of State for Communications and Information and Health Rahayu Mahzam.
