In an interview at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Mr. Ong Keng Yong, a distinguished Ambassador-at-Large from Singapore, shared insights into ASEAN’s current state and future prospects. Ambassador Ong, who has over 25 years of experience, discussed the region’s economic and political landscape.
ASEAN, comprising ten Southeast Asian nations, continues to flourish economically. Despite facing some challenges with neighboring countries and global powers, the region has managed to maintain robust economic and political relations among its member states. Ambassador Ong noted, “The economic activities in our region are very vibrant,” highlighting the region’s strategic geographical location between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and its proximity to populous nations like China and India.
The ambassador also addressed the importance of digitalization and new technologies, which are transforming economies and societies in Southeast Asia. He emphasized the region’s readiness to embrace digital advancements and manage climate change, noting these as crucial areas for future growth.
ASEAN’s open and accessible nature has fostered a dynamic environment for tourism and cultural exchange. Ambassador Ong highlighted the region’s appeal to international musicians and performers, making Southeast Asia an exciting place for cultural activities.
Discussing the upcoming 60th anniversary of ASEAN, Ambassador Ong expressed optimism about the region’s future. He pointed out that the middle class is growing, and the population is well-educated and entrepreneurial. This growth, coupled with the region’s strategic location and peaceful environment, makes Southeast Asia a hub of opportunities.
Ambassador Ong also touched on the importance of leadership in navigating international relations and fostering economic development. He stressed that maintaining peace and openness is vital for attracting business and investment.
The ambassador concluded by encouraging collaboration and systematic management of opportunities. He mentioned the Global Opportunities Forum as a platform to present and explore investment stories, focusing on health, education, and sustainability.
