Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State, reaffirms Singapore’s commitment to international law and nuclear safety at the Summit on Peace in Ukraine held in Switzerland on June 15-16, 2024.
Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State (SMS) for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of National Development, attended the Summit on Peace in Ukraine as the Special Envoy of the Prime Minister. The summit took place in Switzerland from June 15 to 16, 2024.
During the summit, SMS Sim reiterated Singapore’s unwavering commitment to international law and the United Nations (UN) Charter. She emphasized Singapore’s support for the territorial integrity, political independence, and sovereignty of all countries. Sim stressed that upholding these principles is crucial for global security and particularly important for Singapore.
As a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its Board of Governors, Singapore expressed grave concern over the nuclear safety risks at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). Sim Ann reaffirmed Singapore’s support for the IAEA Director-General’s five basic principles and the seven indispensable pillars for nuclear safety and security. She highlighted the importance of adhering to these principles to prevent nuclear accidents that could have widespread consequences.
Sim Ann called on Russia to cease hostilities and engage in good faith negotiations with Ukraine to achieve a peaceful and lasting resolution based on international law and the UN Charter.
