Singapore’s Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Lawrence Wong, hosted an official dinner on June 18, 2024, to honor Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet and his delegation. The event celebrated the enduring relationship between Singapore and Cambodia, emphasizing the historic and future cooperation between the two countries.

During his speech, PM Wong acknowledged the deep-rooted ties that began with Singapore’s founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihanouk. He noted the steadfast support Cambodia offered Singapore, including its recognition of Singapore’s independence in 1965.

PM Wong highlighted PM Manet’s familiarity with Singapore, having visited multiple times under various capacities, including the Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellowship Programme in 2018. These visits have fostered strong friendships and mutual understanding, further strengthening bilateral ties.

The dinner underscored the significant growth in trade and investment between the two nations, with Singapore being a top investor in Cambodia. PM Wong mentioned key areas of economic cooperation, including renewable energy and carbon credits, pointing out initiatives like the Keppel Energy project and the MOU on carbon credits collaboration.

Education and human capital development were also highlighted, with Cambodia being a major participant in the Singapore Cooperation Programme. PM Wong expressed Singapore’s commitment to sharing development experiences and customizing programs to meet Cambodia’s needs.

Cultural exchanges were celebrated, particularly the collaboration on a special exhibition at Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay featuring a replica of Angkor Wat adorned with Cambodian orchids. The event also marked the naming of a hybrid orchid in honor of PM Manet.

In his closing remarks, PM Wong emphasized the shared challenges and common interests between Singapore and Cambodia, particularly within the ASEAN framework. He expressed confidence in PM Manet’s vision for Cambodia’s future and reiterated Singapore’s support for Cambodia’s development priorities.
