The 5th AITIGA-JC meeting aims to streamline the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement to boost trade and support sustainable growth.
On July 31, 2024, the Fifth Meeting of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement Joint Committee (5th AITIGA-JC) was held at the ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat. The primary focus of the meeting was to review the AITIGA, to make the Agreement more user-friendly, simple, and trade facilitative for businesses. This initiative aims to increase ASEAN-India trade and support sustainable and inclusive growth across the region.
The meeting was co-chaired by Ms. Mastura Ahmad Mustafa, Deputy Secretary General (Trade) at the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, Malaysia, and Mr. Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Secretary at the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India. Both leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing the Agreement to better serve the needs of businesses and promote economic collaboration. Representatives from ASEAN Member States (AMS), India, and the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC) actively participated in the discussions, reflecting a strong commitment to regional economic integration.
Throughout the meeting, delegates reviewed various aspects of the AITIGA, focusing on simplifying procedures and reducing trade barriers. By making the Agreement more accessible and efficient, the committee aims to foster a more robust trade environment between ASEAN and India. The review process is expected to bring significant benefits to businesses, contributing to the overall economic growth and development of the region. The meeting concluded with a consensus on the need for continuous collaboration and periodic reviews to ensure the Agreement remains relevant and effective.
