PM Lawrence Wong shared insights on national priorities, social policies, and international engagements following his recent National Day Rally.
SINGAPORE, 23 August 2024 – Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong held a press conference to provide an update on the government’s direction and initiatives. This session followed his National Day Rally speech and aimed to outline the progress made and future plans for Singapore.
During the press conference, PM Wong emphasized two core pillars guiding Singapore’s future: a renewed social compact and a refreshed Singapore dream. He explained that the social compact focuses on providing support for individuals to overcome setbacks while encouraging personal effort and excellence. The refreshed Singapore dream, on the other hand, envisions a society where people can thrive on their own terms without constant comparison to others. These pillars are central to the government’s vision and will underpin various policy changes and initiatives.
PM Wong also addressed key areas of focus, including improvements in parental leave, job seeker support, and education. He noted ongoing efforts to enhance senior care and address cost of living concerns, particularly for larger families and lower-income groups. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of regular engagements with Singaporeans to understand their needs and align government policies accordingly.
Additionally, PM Wong highlighted Singapore’s need to navigate an increasingly complex global environment. He mentioned recent and upcoming international engagements, including visits to ASEAN countries and participation in major summits like the ASEAN Summit, APEC, and G20. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to strengthen Singapore’s international relations and maintain its relevance on the global stage.
