Malaysia’s panel discussed the rapid growth and investment opportunities within the country’s healthcare sector, highlighting advancements in medical innovation, pharmaceuticals, and medical tourism at the World Opportunities Forum (WOF) 2024

Singapore, August 27th, 2024 — A panel of experts convened to explore the significant investment opportunities within Malaysia’s healthcare sector at World Opportunities Forum (WOF) 2024. The session, titled “Malaysia: Business Opportunities in Healthcare,” was moderated by Ms. Kavitha Mathuvay, Minister of Economic Section at the Malaysian High Commission.

The speakers, including H.E. Dato’ Dr Azfar bin Mohamad Mustafar, High Commissioner of Malaysia; Mr. Vinothan Tulisinathzan, Director of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) in Singapore; Ms. Sherene Azli, Chief Marketing Officer of KPJ Healthcare Berhad; and Mr. Wai Khee, Head of Corporate Advisory in Investment Banking at OCBC Malaysia, shared their insights on the evolving landscape of Malaysia’s healthcare industry and its appeal to international investors.

The session emphasised Malaysia’s strategic positioning as a hub for healthcare innovation and investment. Speakers highlighted the sector’s growth potential, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence for diagnostics, telemedicine, and advanced medical devices. The growing demand for personalised medicine and advanced elderly care services, fueled by the ageing global population, was also discussed as a significant driver of investment.

Malaysia’s commitment to enhancing its healthcare infrastructure and fostering a conducive environment for innovation was underscored as key factors attracting investors. The role of MIDA in promoting and facilitating investments in the sector, along with KPJ Healthcare Berhad’s recent rebranding efforts and expansion in medical tourism, showcased the dynamic nature of Malaysia’s healthcare landscape.

The discussion also explored various financing options available for healthcare projects, including private finance initiatives and diverse investment mechanisms, highlighting the opportunities for growth across both public and private sectors in Malaysia.
