Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, speaking at Teck Ghee’s National Day event, highlighted significant policy changes and urged support for Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s vision for Singapore’s future.
SINGAPORE, 24 August 2024 – Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong addressed the residents of Teck Ghee, marking his first National Day speech in his new role. During the event, Senior Minister Lee expressed his gratitude for the community’s support throughout his years in leadership and discussed the smooth transition of leadership in May.
Senior Minister Lee emphasized Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s recent National Day Rally, where he outlined a new direction for Singapore. Reflecting on four key areas of change, Senior Minister Lee highlighted employment, upskilling, public housing, and family support as central to the government’s plans. He spoke about the introduction of the SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support scheme, the SkillsFuture Mid-Career Training Allowance, and the upcoming changes in public housing, including the new classification of Build-To-Order (BTO) flats. He also detailed enhanced provisions for parental leave and support for families, reinforcing the government’s commitment to creating a family-friendly environment.
Beyond long-term planning, Senior Minister Lee addressed immediate concerns, such as the cost of living. He reassured residents that the government remains committed to helping Singaporeans cope with inflation, highlighting the benefits of a strong Singapore dollar and various financial assistance programs like CDC Vouchers, GST Vouchers, and U-Save Rebates.
In his speech, Senior Minister Lee also praised the ground-up initiatives in Ang Mo Kio, such as the Repair Kopitiam, where residents can repair electrical appliances with community support. He encouraged residents to participate in these initiatives to foster a stronger, more sustainable community.
Concluding his speech, Senior Minister Lee reflected on his 40 years of service as a Member of Parliament for Teck Ghee, expressing pride in the community’s progress and his commitment to supporting Prime Minister Wong and his team. He reaffirmed his dedication to the residents of Ang Mo Kio and Teck Ghee, urging unity and cooperation to build a brighter future for Singapore.
