A new orchid display celebrating the Philippines’ rich biodiversity and cultural heritage marks 55 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Singapore.

Singapore, 16 September 2024 – The Philippine Embassy in Singapore, in collaboration with Gardens by the Bay, unveiled Gardens by the Bahay Kubo: A Fiesta of Orchids. The new orchid display, located at the Cloud Forest, was launched in celebration of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Singapore. The event was graced by Singapore’s Minister for Manpower, Dr. Tan See Leng, as the Guest of Honor, alongside Philippine Secretary for Migrant Workers, Hans Leo J. Cacdac. Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Medardo G. Macaraig and Mr. Felix Loh, CEO of Gardens by the Bay, were also present to commemorate the occasion.

Ambassador Macaraig highlighted the importance of this event, which showcases the beauty and resilience of Philippine orchids while serving as a cultural bridge between the two nations. “The orchids we present today symbolize resilience and beauty, much like the relationship between our two countries—strong, growing, and ever-flourishing,” he remarked. Dr. Tan See Leng emphasized the significance of people-to-people ties, acknowledging the contributions of the Filipino community in Singapore and the shared cultural values that unite both countries.

Running until January 2025, the exhibit is set against the backdrop of the traditional Filipino bahay kubo, surrounded by stunning Philippine landscapes and cultural displays. The centerpiece of the exhibit is the majestic waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana), known as the Queen of Orchids, symbolizing the Philippines’ rich orchid biodiversity. The launch also featured cultural performances by the Filipino Dance Club, showcasing traditional and modern takes on the tinikling, along with displays of Filipino craftsmanship by Maison Inabel and other Filipino brands. Guests enjoyed traditional Filipino food and beverages, reflecting the spirit of bayanihan that made the exhibit a success.
