Prime Minister Lawrence Wong officiates the historic commissioning of the RSS Invincible and RSS Impeccable, marking a key milestone in Singapore’s naval defense strategy on September 24, 2024.
SINGAPORE, September 24, 2024 – Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong presided over the commissioning ceremony of Singapore’s first two Invincible-class submarines, RSS Invincible and RSS Impeccable. The ceremony, held at Changi Naval Base, represents a major achievement for the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), marking the culmination of years of collaboration and dedication to modernizing Singapore’s defense capabilities.
The submarines were launched in Germany in 2019 (RSS Invincible) and 2022 (RSS Impeccable), as part of a strategic partnership with Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and the German Navy. Both submarines are now fully operational, boasting advanced technology designed for increased maneuverability, quieter operation, and enhanced durability to navigate congested waters in Southeast Asia. These capabilities will enhance Singapore’s maritime security and ensure the unimpeded movement of trade and resources through critical sea lines.
In his speech, Prime Minister Wong emphasized the importance of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) remaining vigilant amid shifting global dynamics and emerging threats. The commissioning of the Invincible-class submarines forms part of a broader strategy to continually upgrade the SAF’s capabilities across all branches, including new technologies such as F-35 fighter jets, Next-Generation Howitzers, and enhanced cyber warfare preparedness.
Reflecting on Singapore’s submarine journey, Prime Minister Wong highlighted the RSN’s humble beginnings in 1967 with just two wooden boats. Over the years, the navy has transformed into a sophisticated force, and the introduction of the Invincible-class submarines marks a significant leap forward in its operational capabilities. He acknowledged the contributions of pioneer submariners who laid the foundation for this progress, often working under challenging conditions to build Singapore’s submarine force.
The event also commemorated 25 years of Singapore’s submarine program, a journey that began with second-hand vessels from Sweden and has now evolved into the commissioning of custom-built, advanced submarines tailored to meet the specific needs of the RSN. Prime Minister Wong expressed deep gratitude to Singapore’s partners, including ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and the German Navy, for their support in this transformative journey.
The crews of RSS Invincible and RSS Impeccable, alongside their partners in Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and ST Engineering, were recognized for their commitment and professionalism, especially during the challenging periods of the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected their training in Germany.
The commissioning ceremony concluded with a tribute to the men and women who will operate the submarines. Prime Minister Wong entrusted them with the critical mission of defending Singapore’s maritime interests and urged them to carry forward the legacy of excellence and dedication demonstrated by previous generations of submariners.
