From January 22 to 24, 2025, Langkawi, Malaysia, hosted the Special Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME) 2025 and its associated meetings. The event was chaired by Dato’ Mad Zaidi bin Mohd Karli, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), who led discussions to shape ASEAN’s energy collaboration agenda for the year ahead.

A significant highlight of the meeting was the endorsement of the Priority Economic Deliverables (PED) and energy sector priorities for 2025, in alignment with Malaysia’s chairmanship. Key agreements included the finalization of the text for the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) Enhanced Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the Terms of Reference (ToR) for APG-related bodies. Additionally, the ASEAN Framework Agreement for Petroleum Security was approved, paving the way for its signing later this year.

The meeting reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to fostering sustainable energy development, energy security, and regional cooperation as vital components of its economic integration.
