India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, presented the Union Budget for the financial year 2025-26 in Parliament on 1 February, 2025, outlining a significant push for tourism development. The budget emphasises investment in the sector, including medical tourism and the HealInIndia initiative, aiming to stimulate employment-led growth and establish India as a leading global travel and wellness destination.

Key announcements include the development of the top 50 tourist destinations in the country. This initiative will involve a collaborative approach with state governments, who will be responsible for providing land for essential infrastructure. Hotels in these designated locations will be incorporated into the infrastructure HML (likely High-Mileage Logistics or a similar programme). The government will also facilitate access to MUDRA loans for homestays, supporting local businesses and accommodation options.

Continuing the focus on spiritual tourism from the July budget, the government will place particular emphasis on destinations associated with the life and teachings of Lord Buddha. This initiative aims to attract both domestic and international visitors interested in cultural and religious heritage.

The budget also highlighted the promotion of medical tourism and the Heal in India initiative. This will involve partnerships with the private sector, focusing on capacity building and streamlined visa regulations to make India a more attractive destination for medical travellers. The government’s strategy aims to leverage India’s healthcare expertise and infrastructure to attract international patients
