President Cyril Ramaphosa officially opened and addressed the Group of 20 (G20) Foreign Ministers Meeting on 20 February 2025 at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg. The meeting, hosted by Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola, took place under South Africa’s G20 Presidency theme of Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.

Over two days, foreign ministers engaged in plenary sessions discussing current global geopolitical dynamics, the Review of G20@20, and South Africa’s High-Level Deliverables under its presidency. The review examined the G20’s impact over the past two decades, assessing its role in addressing economic challenges and fostering international cooperation.

Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, acknowledged the strong ties between Singapore and South Africa. He noted that “Singapore and South Africa share excellent ties, underpinned by strong economic collaboration. South Africa is a significant trading partner in Sub-Saharan Africa. It has immense growth potential, driven by its young population, rich resources, and rapid digital transformation.”

The G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting served as a precursor to the G20 Summit, which brings together leaders from the world’s largest economies to discuss pressing global challenges. The discussions in Johannesburg contributed to shaping the agenda for the upcoming summit, reinforcing South Africa’s commitment to multilateralism and inclusive global governance.
