Honouring Diplomacy and Strengthening International Friendships

SINGAPORE, 13 March 2025 – President Tharman Shanmugaratnam hosted the President’s Annual Diplomatic Reception (PADR) at the Singapore National Gallery, bringing together heads of diplomatic and consular missions, as well as representatives from international organisations to honour their contributions in fostering diplomatic relations with Singapore. Held annually since 1985, PADR serves as a platform to reaffirm Singapore’s commitment to international cooperation and global engagement.

This year’s event held special significance as Singapore celebrates 60 years of diplomatic relations with countries across the world. The evening featured a photographic exhibition highlighting key milestones in Singapore’s diplomatic history, showcasing how the country has cultivated and expanded its global partnerships over the past six decades. Guests were also treated to musical performances of internationally renowned compositions, reflecting Singapore’s role in bridging cultures and fostering people-to-people connections.

In a Facebook post, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong shared his thoughts on the occasion, “Happy to meet many friends of Singapore at the President’s Annual Diplomatic Reception (PADR). Singapore is a small nation, but we want to play our part in the international community. Our diplomats work hard to foster strong friendships, build mutual understanding, and work for win-win cooperation between countries while upholding our national interests. As we mark our #SG60 year, let us not take for granted the progress that we have made. May our ties with other countries continue to strengthen, especially in these uncertain and turbulent times.”

Echoing this sentiment, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasised Singapore’s diplomatic priorities in a social media post, “Singapore seeks to be friends with all countries, big and small, and will pursue win-win cooperation with all nations willing to work with us. Diplomats play a key role in nurturing these ties and fostering mutual understanding. This is how our little red dot can navigate a more volatile and turbulent world.”

Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan also highlighted the importance of strong diplomatic connections in an Instagram post, stating, “In these times of great change, maintaining relationships on the basis of mutual respect and trust becomes all the more vital. Our diplomatic partners play a crucial role in keeping Singapore connected with the world.”

The PADR remains a cornerstone of Singapore’s diplomatic calendar, reaffirming its commitment to cooperation, multilateralism, and international engagement as the nation looks toward a future of continued friendship, collaboration, and shared prosperity.
